I want to copy the name of another LJ user from my flist into an entry (to tag someone) but I have no idea how to do this. I tried to highlight an LJ name and then right click to do a typical copy/paste but that is clearly not the way. Could someone comment with step by step instructions? Once I know how to do things they become second nature, but I need to be "walked" through slowly the first time around with detailed instructions. Thank you to whoever out there can help!

This is starting to drive me crazy. I'm sorry I keep bombarding you with comments and deleting them. LJ just doesn't want me to help you.

<
lj user
=
"
NAME HERE
"
/>

Hey, what you want to do use an lj tag that makes the user's name appear:

Type < lj user="whoever" > taking the spaces out after the first carrot and before the last. You'll get this, [livejournal.com profile] negativeerin, for example.

Thank you, now I'll give it a try!

I think this is what you are talking about:

You type: < lj user="moose74" > Just take the spaces out between the carets <> and the text and you'll get: [livejournal.com profile] moose74.

Or, you know, whomever's user name you want in there! :P

There are 2 ways. If you do your posts in HTML, you just enter

[lj user="name" /] but use these < > instead of the [] brackets.
(I had to do that so the text wouldn't show up as [livejournal.com profile] user. )

If you use the rich text for posts, there is a little icon/button with a user "head" on it; if you choose it at the point where you want to insert the LJ user's name, it pops up a dialog box and you just put the user name in the box and enter, and the LJ name is automatically inserted into your post.

You mean link someone in your post? Their journal rather than a specific post (for instance, like how I put my beta's name each time I update my series?).

If so, this is what you do:

1) Go to update your journal and click on the rich text option just below the text box.
2) When the page loads, you will see a little row of buttons above it (a B on the left hand side, arrows on the right).
3) You see the little man with the blue shirt icon, fourth from the right? Click on that.
4) A little box saying 'Explorer User Prompt' will come up. It asks you to enter a username. Type it in exactly how it appears (eg: shadownyc) and click okay.
5) The user name will now appear in the text box next to the 'little man wearing a shirt' symbol. When you have finished writing your post, click 'update journal' as you would normally. The name will be highlighted and will now be a link.

I hope that's what you meant, and that instructions are clear enough. :)

I'm generally LJ illiterate but I actually know how to do this. It's in the FAQs, but use these symbols <> inside them type lj user="ljname" with no spaces between the beginning and ending symbols and the text. jule

use this code:
<lj user="vedaprophet">
to make [livejournal.com profile] vedaprophet

see? replace vedaprophet in the code with whatever the user's name is. :)

The tag for LJ user names is this:

< lj user="username" >

Just without the spaces between the first < and the lj, and the last " and the last >. :D

Also, to make your ficlet request from the Lizathon Lottery, just send [livejournal.com profile] negativeerin an e-mail at negativeerin@livejournal.com . :D

Thanks for your help. Erin wrote a great fic for me entitled, "One". I was so giddy when I read it. It makes knowing all kinds of trivia worth while. :)

It's pretty simple. Here's the code - just remove the spaces EXCEPT for the one between lj and user.

< lj user = " name of journal " >

Um, you should be able to copy-paste. But to make it into an official link/tag, you do:

lj user="username"

Except with HTML brackets around that. Did that make sense?

From: [identity profile] shadownyc.livejournal.com
Thanks, that DID make sense!

You mean do this [livejournal.com profile] finnfan ??

You just write (lj user="nameofthepersonyouwanttotag")
but replace ( and ) with < and >.

Hope this was what you meant.
