Friends & Lovers
As we entered the final week of regular classes, Jeff and I seemed to spend more and more time with our friends. A lot of them would be going to away for the summer; some with their families, some with the parent they don’t live with (like I did when I was in Canada all those fucking wasted years – yes, I’m still angry at my mothers) and some to work at camps as counselors.

When we met the gang at the movies to see some Brett Keller film (that guy makes the shittiest films, but no one hears you if you start talking because of all the explosions), we discovered that there were more people coming than we realized.
Matt and Jessica were there and so were two other guys from the team and their dates but there was also a couple I’d never met before. Jessica immediately took up the introductions. It seems that her brother, Mark, who’s nineteen, is gay and his boyfriend Rick is seventeen and finishing his junior year at Allegheny High.
At first I thought it was kind of cool to actually have more than one gay couple in our group until we went out for a junk food binge after the movie. “Hey, don’t get me wrong, All-star, but the best thing about being gay is that you can have a boyfriend and still play on the sidelines.”
Rick finally opened his mouth, “Yeah, Mark says that being gay gives us the right to trick when we want and still have a relationship. Girls just don’t understand.”
I wasn’t sure I understood either. I know that I’ve heard a lot about both my dads’ behavior over the years, but I never really listened all that closely. Maybe it was time to think about all this shit before I said something that I didn’t mean OR did something I didn’t want.
Jeff surprised me by answering Rick, “You know, Ricky, you and I are the same age. I had a boyfriend a lot like Mark last year. He was older and I thought whatever he said was THE word. “What’s Britin?”

With that we rose and said our goodbyes to all our friends and headed outside to wait for dad to come by. As we left we heard Mark say, “Well fuck me.”
