I saw the movie "The March of the Penguins" this afternoon. It was one of the best documentaries I ever have ever seen in my life. National Geographic really outdid themselves! I only have one bone to pick--this movie should have been rated PG NOT G. There were too many really young children who didn't understand the movie and got bored, talked too much or got scared when nature (predators) became too realistic. I have two children (now 19 and 15). I would never have taken them to a film in the documentary genre without thoroughly checking it out first. Children under 8 just seem too young for this film.

If parents really wanted to see the movie, they need to just hire a sitter and go themselves. There were plenty of people, such as myself, who were at the theater sans children.

I would definitely recommend this film for anyone reading this post!

Oh, there are so many movies that parents really shouldn't take their children to but do anyway. They don't seem to care about the fact that everyone else in the theatre wants to kick them, they just think it's a good way to entertain them for a few hours. Of course, no child is as bad as the grown-up man who sat beside me belching all the way through one movie. That man was a walking advertisement for downloading!

OMG--that guy at the movies sounds gross. You are so right about parents' actions.

I went to see it too and there was an entire Preschool class taking up the first three rows. Half way into the movie, I got up and looked and half the kids were asleep. It was pretty cute.
How presious were the baby penguins?? I want one of my own.

"How precious were the baby penguins??"

I was taken aback by how stunning and sweet they were. The family relationships were also so moving!

"half the kids were asleep" (LOL)

I'm not surprised, the entire film was really over their heads.

Thanks for the rec, since we're probably going to take the kids to see it this weekend. They've been bugging us every time there's a commercial about it on TV. We're lucky - the boys have enjoyed documentaries since they were little.

Parents take their children to movies of all genres without finding out about them first. My hubby is really bad about this. He took the boys to see 'Sean Of The Dead', thinking it was some sort of comedy. It might have been a comedy, but our 8 year old came home absolutely terrified. Making hubby get up in the middle of the night to deal with the nightmares seems to have helped the problem, though!

We learned early on to research first. When our daughter was 4 she went to her first movie, Disney's "The Little Mermaid". She was so hysterical at the scary Octopus scene that she had to temporarily leave the theater, but we made her go back for the happy ending. From then on in we always checked what we might face in any film.
Sometimes hubbies don't get it (on many things), until they're forced to by the aftermath. Been there. ;)
